Carrots, and Spring Planning

Though winter may seem gray and bleak, below the surface – nestled in the soil of our RSA farm plot in Kingston – these beautiful carrots have been growing with colors reminiscent of the summer sun! (Some of them are even a rich purple.)  Theresa of First Field sent us these images early last week before dropping off the bunches of carrots to our sister restaurant, ONE 53.  Try the Seared Rabbit Loin, served with Bacon Potato Hash, Chantrelle Mushrooms and garnished with some of these gorgeous carrots!

Our RSA farm has been providing us with a fair amount of fresh produce through the winter.  Along with the carrots, our rows of garlic have been enduring the winter (we eagerly await harvesting fresh garlic for use in our sauces & dishes!)  With the mild winter we’ve had – and the especially warm days we’ve had recently – we are getting really excited to start planting the peas!

On a related note, we are always looking for a few fun, hard working ‘farm hands’.  Experience needed!  Contact First Field for more information.

Lucy’s Holiday Gift Ideas: Handmade & Local

As you move from the pasta freezer to our deli counter, checking items off of your dinner list, take a look at your holiday ‘gift list’ and take another look at Lucy’s!  On the shelves throughout the store, you’ll find an assortment of gourmet food items that would make great gift-basket fillers, stocking stuffers, or thoughtful gifts that will delight just about anyone on your list.

This is our second blog post installment to highlight just a few of the many artisinal, gourmet & locally made items at Lucy’s that are perfect for holiday gift giving and sharing.

Bucks County Biscotti Chocolate Peppermint Biscotti: This artisan biscotti baked in Bucks County, PA has been awarded the “Best in Philly” honor, and for good reason!   Made in the traditional Italian style using all-natural ingredients, these cookies are a hit year-round at Lucy’s, though we love the seasonal Chocolate Peppermint Biscotti around the holidays!  Perfect when paired with coffee or as a special treat along side a mug of hot chocolate.

First Field Ketchup and Relish:  You may have heard us mention First Field during the summer months, as we shared a bountiful harvest from our RSA field in Kingston, or you may have enjoyed a dab of First Field’s locally produced Jersey ketchup on a burger at our sister restaurant, ONE 53.  We are proud to sell their small batch ketchup and relish on the shelves at Lucy’s, and we wouldn’t mind seeing a jar of each in a gift basket with our name on it!

NJ Honey by Bamboo Apiaries:  Entertaining guests over the holidays?  When selecting from our offering of locally made cheeses for your cheese platter, don’t forget the finishing touch: some New Jersey honey!  A rustic chunk of honeycomb or a drizzle from a jar of New Jersey wildflower honey will add another dimension to your platter.

Lucy’s Gift Ideas: Gourmet, Handmade, Locally Made

As you move from the pasta freezer to our deli counter, checking items off of your dinner list, take a look at your holiday ‘gift list’ and take another look at Lucy’s!  On the shelves throughout the store, you’ll find an assortment of gourmet food items that would make great gift-basket fillers, stocking stuffers, or thoughtful gifts that will delight just about anyone on your list.

We will be highlighting just a few of the many items here on our blog over the upcoming weeks, starting with these: all holiday classics with a deliciously sophisticated twist!

CC Made Artisinal Caramel Corn: This gourmet caramel corn is the perfect holiday stocking stuffer or gift basket addition.  Made with quality ingredients, this caramel corn has the perfect balance of flavor & texture.  Available in Spiced Almond or Pistachio varieties.  A holiday classic with a new twist!

Simply Nic’s baking mix: Nic’s neighbors loved the Rosemary shortbread on her holiday cookie trays so much that she went into business selling the delicious cookies at home in the Princeton area, and beyond.  Now she sells the mix, too!  They are made with locally sourced ingredients (including local herbs, honey & Small World Coffee’s locally roasted espresso beans) for a shortbread that’s rich & full of flavor.

MarieBelle Aztec Hot Chocolate: To indulge the chocolate lover on your list!  The 65% South American single-origin cacao can be mixed with milk for a rich cup of hot chocolate, or used when baking.  Nothing says “holiday cheer” quite like a cup of hot chocolate!

Lucy’s Christmas: Bûche de Noël

The yule log, or Christmas log, is a tradition whose origins can be traced to several historical European cultures.  In the depth of winter, families would stoke their fires with the ceremonial log, thought to ensure prosperity and protection against evil for the coming year.  Though the traditional fetching of the log itself faded over time, it was replaced by the Bûche de Noël, a sweet cake made in the shape of the yule log.

Our chef, Tommy, has prepared this holiday classic for Lucy’s.  His handmade Bûche de Noël cakes are made from scratch, decorated with care and will be a stunning part of your Christmas festivities!  Each cake serves 10-12. $35.

Celebrating 15 Years of Lucy’s!

Photos: Fall at the Farm

As you may know from our previous posts, we are involved in an exciting RSA (Restaurant Sponsored Agriculture) program with first field, the local ketchup & relish company.  The farm is off of Route 27 and was the source for a majority of our summer produce.  We are proud to be a part of this partnership, since we are focused on serving the freshest food with the most locally sourced produce as possible – and nothing beats our homegrown vegetables when it comes to fresh and local!

Now that we’ve entered into the (much) cooler months, the pace at the field has slowed, but is certainly nowhere near stopping.  We’ve harvested greens, root veggies, and other late-season produce, and you may have had them in one of your recent dishes, either from Lucy’s or from ONE 53.  Below are some snapshots from the farm earlier in the week.

We hope you enjoy taking a look behind the scene’s at Lucy’s.  We know we love to show our love and dedication to good food!
